Poll Time! :)

In review after review here on the Archive, I read people saying things like: "I was tired after this show from all the non-stop dancing," or "I was still dancing all the way out into the parking lot." I never really thought of the Dead as being that dance-oriented...but I'm obviously wrong!

What are the best Grateful Dead tunes to dance to?

This will cement my status as ultimate geek and all around odd ball, but I never danced at concerts...lots of yelling and hugging (depending on sex ratio of group in attendance) between songs and drinking and smoking and such, but usual relative contemplative during the actual numbers.

Now, at parties with DEAD cover bands (ie, friends that did this in HS/College), by far and away the best songs to dance to were Bertha and PITB.

I just wanted to say thanks to all who commented...even you snarky ones! I have seen the light, and the next time I play Scarlet, I will get up and attempt the "L.A. Strut." Wish me luck! :)

I only dance to the "quiet notes" during Stella Beer, I
mean Blue. During those whole notes of silence, I dance my
ass off. Otherwise, I stand perfectly still and stare.

I liked to dance during Drums, Space, and the Brent tunes. The rest of the show was great for a bathroom break or getting a soda.

Really?! I guess I never thought of them as much else. I can remember some shows where I swear no one was sitting.

That being said, I guess it depends on what kind of dancer you are too. Spinner's will dance to anything, including some guy flushing the toilet in between Drums/Space

Some of my favs

Let it Grow
Playin'
Terrapin
Music Never Stopped

At the P&F show at the Maritime Hall on 2/18/01, I witnessed the best dancer I'd ever seen. Dancin up and down the staircase completely out of control, yet IN control. He never bumped into anyone, yet gyrated all over the place. Heck, that show was PACKED. Btw, I met Chet Helms there, talked to him for several minutes- (I was later told who he was, just an aging hippy to me then)

Love to watch the hippie girls dance...

The old upbeat version of They Love Each Other is a good one for me and the missus.

A good Scarlet gets me in the Dead Head Wiggle pretty well on occasion.

shouldn't it be limited to songs consistently danced to for the last 1/2 of the trip?

Eyes, Althea, Bertha, Cold Rain...... and I could go on + on,

they were the best dance band of all time.

Mr. Gnarley has it right ....... just in reverse =P
Seriously - unless it was drums - space - a brent tune - when weren't ya dancin' ? Errr, and some of those later tunes. I dunno if i was dancing or convulsing when Ch-Easy Answers or Samba in the pain came up.

But for sure - Estimated / eyes - Scarlet Fire - China/Rider - St. Of Circumstance - Bertha, definitly. The list goes on.

Agreed - nothing like a Brent tune to mess up the dance-a-thon.

Dancin in the Streets
Good Lovin
Goin down the Road Feelin Bad
Bertha (no question)
Shakedown - no brainer
Feel like a Stranger

O yeah . . . Around and Around
Johnny B Goode
well this list is long . . .any of the Jamming tunes

And for Mr. Tell - I never took you for a stick (arrow) in the Mud. Because you missed out - I suggest grabing the nearest show that opens with Shakedown and start dancing.

back in the late 70's & early 80's i wuz a discofool, in fact, went out dancin every weekend to Bay Area Disco's like Orphan Annies -right on the west side of the San Mateo bridge and various places in Dublin, Ca.

Not so much at GD shows...the above the waist movement, but rarely the feet...i developed my deadhead convoluted style (very freeform) into the late 80's and on....
When u can dance thru a Darkstar, you've arrived-haha
